Hi!
I’m glad you opened this door and came in. I write this newsletter for people who like to chew on the interesting little issues that crop up while you’re absorbed in being human, which isn’t always easy. But I think philosophy can help sort out our crazy existence and live a little better, a little wiser.
Since I’m a moral philosopher interested in care ethics and the relational concept of a person, a lot of my writing connects to those themes. Here’s some background:
And because (as it turns out) I’m a human, I’m also interested in meaning in life. But I’ll write about anything that catches my attention, including home, hope, travel, or beauty. If you’re into that, subscribe and join me every Thursday for a short philosophical reflection on whatever’s been on my mind. (Feel free to suggest topics in the comments as well!)
Philosophy is one of the ways people make sense and meaning out of everyday experience—even if you didn’t study it in school. I’m a philosopher because I can’t help it, and it turns out that a lot of people are too, even if they’re not formally trained in philosophy. The world is so much more interesting than we sometimes notice!
Søren Kierkegaard wrote in Either/Or that “Experience shows that it is not at all difficult for philosophy to begin. Far from it. It begins, in fact, with nothing and therefore can always begin. But it is always difficult for philosophy and philosophers to stop.” My kids will tell you that this is true (both parts). But I like to keep these pieces short—1000-1500 words a week.
Why subscribe?
When humaning feels hard or just puzzling, philosophy can help sort things out. When you subscribe, you get reflections every Thursday on the philosophical dimensions of everyday life, and full access to the publication archives. Plus you don’t have to remember to visit the page—your email will automatically let you know when there’s a new post! And bonus for me, subscribers show I have a steady audience, and this will help me get my book—Who We Are and How To Live—published. (Message me if you want to hear more about it!)
